Fake fur has spent years trying to convincingly impersonate the real thing — even, neutral tones, a texture built to pass at a glance. The fall/winter runways took the opposite approach this season, and it's a more interesting outcome: coats built from fur that is obviously, deliberately not trying to look natural.

The range was wide. One house sent out a coat in bold diagonal stripes of navy and white, more graphic than animal. Another combined red, black, and warm yellow into a single piece with the density and detail of a couture embroidery, using fur as color-blocking rather than texture. A third leaned into a saturated marigold-and-cream combination with a matching oversized hat, treating the coat and headpiece as one continuous statement. A fourth took the more familiar shearling-collar silhouette and let a soft ombré fade from cream into brown do the work instead of a bold pattern.

What ties the four together is volume and confidence rather than a shared palette: every one of these pieces is generously sized, meant to be seen from across a room, and none of them apologize for being obviously fake fur rather than something trying to pass as real. As a styling cue, that's the actual takeaway — a fake-fur piece this season reads better the less it tries to look like anything other than exactly what it is.
