# Tweed Jackets Don't Need a Matching Skirt Anymore

The tweed jacket used to come as a package deal, jacket on top, matching skirt or trouser below, the whole look reading a little too much like a uniform. That pairing is loosening up, pushed along by Matthieu Blazy's recent work at Chanel, where the house most associated with tweed has been putting it next to things it was never supposed to touch.

The idea driving most of it is high-low dressing: keep the structure and polish of the jacket up top, then undercut it with something more casual below. Denim does a lot of that work, whether it's a baggy or distressed pair, a dark wash, a flare, or even white jeans, all of which read more current against tweed than the matching trouser ever did. Kendall Jenner and Nicole Kidman have both landed on the same answer separately: a tweed jacket over straight-leg jeans, simple enough that it barely needs explaining.

Skirts haven't disappeared from the equation, they've just gotten more options. A matching tweed set is still in play for anyone who wants the traditional version, but leather, pleated, and mini skirts all read less expected, which is sort of the point. On the dressier end, capris and tailored trousers in burgundy, chocolate brown, or cobalt swap the usual neutral trouser for something with more presence, while shorts, whether micro or just the everyday kind, push the pairing furthest from where tweed started.

The footwear and accessories are doing more work than they used to as well. A heel or boot dresses up whatever's happening below the jacket, while sneakers pull the same outfit toward something more relaxed. Once the weather turns, swapping a kitten heel for a closed-toe pump, or pairing shorts with tights and knee-high boots, keeps the formula going through colder months. The throughline across all of it: color helps. A trouser in anything other than black or gray keeps the whole outfit from reading like it belongs in an office.
