Runtan “Desmond” Du founded his independent, eponymous label Run Tan Du in 2020 and has built a reputation in New York for collections that use mythology as raw material rather than costume reference. His latest, Undefined Deity, threads ancient creation and transformation myths through the collection's shapes and construction, developed alongside designer-stylist Dian Jin, whose sensibility brings a more refined femininity to Du's conceptual instincts.
Du's design vocabulary didn't start in mythology. He began in mass-market design at Children's Apparel Network before moving into technical design and production at Lady & Butler, where he now works translating conceptual ideas into finished garments through pattern-making and construction work that a lot of designers outsource entirely — a skill set that shows in how cleanly his own runway pieces hold together.
Off his own line, Du is also a senior mentor at DIALECTIVE, a New York fashion organization that has become a real foothold for emerging designers through shared studio space, runway shows and pop-ups during Fashion Week. His role there runs less toward teaching technique and more toward helping younger designers figure out how to turn a concept into something that actually ships.
