Low-rise jeans spent most of the past decade in exile, pushed out by a high-waisted standard that felt almost mandatory. They're making their way back regardless, with Chanel and Gucci both sending lower waistlines down recent runways, and the return comes with an unspoken asterisk: this isn't a straight rerun of the early 2000s.
The silhouette's first life belonged to Paris Hilton and Kate Moss, who turned low-rise into a defining look of that era almost on their own. Its second life looks different, carried now by Zoë Kravitz and Kendall Jenner, and formalized a bit further by Hailey Bieber's low-rise denim collaboration with Gap, proof the style has moved from nostalgia act to something brands are willing to build a collection around.
The actual argument for trying it again isn't really about nostalgia at all. Done with any care, low-rise can work on more body types than its Y2K reputation suggests. The fit just has to be right, and the top on top of it matters more than people expect. Treating the whole look like it only works with a crop top is where most of the skepticism comes from, and it's also the easiest part to fix.
